Fork Union Military Academy defeats American Legion Post 539

Fork Union Military Academy defeated American Legion Post 539 831 to 777 in the National Air Rifle New Shooter League. Their second win in a row.  They currently have a 3 – 1 record. Fork Union Military Academy was led by, Nicholas Moore who shot a 229. The remaining contributing members were Brian Wu, Khang Le, and Adam Nazar. Fork Union Military Academy is from Fork Union, VA, and is coached by David Wallace.

American Legion Post 539 currently has a 1 – 2 record. American Legion Post 539 was led by, David Woodby who shot a 234. The remaining contributing members were Lane Jackson, Edward Moore, and John Lilly. American Legion Post 539 is from New Bern, NC, and is coached by LCDR Ronald Fry. 

Next up Fork Union Military Academy will compete against Hopewell AJROTC from Huntersville, NC. Hopewell AJROTC currently has a 2 – 1 record. While American Legion Post 539 will compete against Pelion AJROTC from Pelion, SC. Pelion AJROTC currently has a 2 – 1 record. 

These two teams are competing in the National Air Rifle “New Shooter” League. Sponsored by the Orion Scoring System, the league is a national team league exclusive to athletes in their first year of competition. Teams are from high schools and junior rifle clubs throughout the United States. Over 10 weeks each team competes in 8 games. Each week, each team is paired with another team with a near equal win-loss record. 

In each game the teams compete in what is known as a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school age athletes. Each athlete will shoots 10 shots in three different shooting positions, prone, standing, and kneeling. Each shot is worth a maximum of 10 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete’s total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.

Waller AFJROTC finished the season with a 0 – 1 record. Waller AFJROTC was led by, William Capt who shot a 199. The remaining contributing members were Logan Robertson, Vanessa Martinez, and Francisco Acosta. Waller AFJROTC is from Waller, TX, and is coached by Lt Col Byrl Engel.

This coming week American Legion Post 539 has a bye week. While Waller AFJROTC will compete against Stranahan MCJROTC from Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Stranahan MCJROTC currently has a 1 – 0 record.
