Lap Robes for Veterans

In 2017 Post 539 adopted 17 veterans that live at the Brookdale and Riverview nursing homes. Sam Coxson, Post Service Officer, delivered Christmas gift bags to them. Sam commented that a popular item was the several lap robes that were donated. Yvonne Olmstead, wife of Post 539 Sgt-at-Arms Jack Olmstead and an avid knitter decided to knit a lap robe for each of our adopted veterans. However, due to personal difficulties with her home being damaged during Hurricane Florence she was only able to complete 6 lap robes. Undaunted by this setback, Yvonne reached out to the network of local knitters and eventually made contact with Diana Thompson with the knitting group at St. Paul’s Catholic Church. Yvonne explained the situation to Ms Thompson. Ms. Thompson and her group donated the balance of the 17 lap robes needed for our adopted veterans.
