Craven County Veterans Stand-down is a free outreach event to all military veterans and their families. Connecting veterans to federal, state and local resources such as VA benefits, employment, PTSD/TBI counseling, homeless prevention, and much more.

The fifth annual Veterans Stand-Down has been set for Friday, Sept. 20 at the Stanley White Recreation Center in New Bern. The event, which is designed to provide veterans with links to local, state and national veterans service provider, is open to veterans of all eras, active duty personnel and family members.

Lovay Wallace-Singleton, event organizer and executive director of the Veterans Employment Base Camp and Organic Garden, explained that the Veterans Stand-Down serves as an outreach to veterans in Craven, Pamlico, Jones, Carteret, and Onslow counties. She said the mission of the Stand-Down is to bring together veterans with federal, state, county, and community services in one location, for a “one-stop network” opportunity.

Wallace-Singleton said this year’s Stand-Down will also provide veterans free transportation to the site, breakfast and lunch, clothing, hygiene kits, and appreciation gifts

“We’re also thinking about what happens to the veterans when they go home, what happens after they leave,” she commented. “We’re putting together a lot of information to give them, so we started putting everything into a resource guide and we hand that out to every veteran.”

According to Wallace-Singleton the Veterans Stand-Down has grown in scope since 2014, serving close to 200 veterans last year. In 2015, N.C. Congressman Walter Jones and former director of the N.C. Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, Ilario Pantano, spoke at the event.

The Veterans Stand-Down is modeled after a similar concept used during the Vietnam War to provide a safe retreat for veterans returning from combat operations. At secure base camp areas, troops were able to take care of personal hygiene, get clean uniforms, enjoy warm meals, receive medical and dental care and send and receive mail.

Wallace-Singleton said the Veterans-Stand-Down had received “great support” from the City of New Bern. She said the outreach event benefits the city by promoting it as a place where veterans can be provided services on a federal and state level and receive updated information about education and employment opportunities.

“There’s a variety of things that maybe Craven County veteran providers would not have that we’re able to bring in,” she commented.

The 2018 Veterans Stand-Down will be held September 20 at the Stanley White recreation Center at 910 Chapman St., New Bern from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
